National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC),

Washington Update

09/08/2009

Remembering Senator Ted Kennedy:

Last week, NACHC launched a web page in memory of the late U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. It includes a timeline, quotes from writers and Sen. Kennedy himself, photos and video of the “founding father” of the Health Center Movement. The page is linked from the front door of NACHC.com and can be accessed directly at www.rememberingteddy.com.

Congress is Back, and Health Reform is Issue #1:

“Today, Congress returns to Washington. Tomorrow, President Obama addresses a joint session of Congress, and the nation, in a late-inning push to find a deal that will make meaningful health care reform a reality. So where do we stand?” – John Sawyer, Health Centers on the Hill

Learn the Latest at Friday's Tele-Town Hall Meeting:

Congress is acting, the President is speaking – and we’ll be providing the latest information on how both may impact health centers and the patients they serve. Join NACHC staff and your fellow health center advocates for an interactive Tele-Town Hall FRIDAY (September 11) at 2 p.m. EDT. To participate, you will receive a phone call that day that will connect you; we need to have your direct line at work or the number where you will be on the 11th – no extensions. No cost to participate. More on reform:

As Congress Returns, Ryan White Reauthorization Gets a Hearing:
“In the weeks to come, we can expect a good deal of activity on this issue, as Congress is likely to consider both a stand-alone reauthorization as well as some sort of temporary ‘fix’ to ensure that all Ryan White activities continue uninterrupted.” – Kaitlin McColgan, Health Centers on the Hill

Study Projects Community Health Center Expansion Would Save $212 Billion:

NACHC “welcomed the findings” of a recent study by George Washington University, which were consistent with other research that has underscored the cost-effectiveness of health centers. However, this is the first study to measure projected ten-year savings. – NACHC media release

Media Spotlight:

“Vincent Keane — President and CEO of Unity Health Care in the District of Columbia — appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal.” – Beau Boughamer, Health Center News and Happenings

Quote of the Week:

"I think (August) can be viewed as participatory democracy, members going out and talking to the people. Nobody can say we haven’t taken the time to look (at the reform legislation).” U.S. House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD)
